내 벗이 몇이나 될까 헤아려보니

물과 돌 , 소나무, 대나무 로다 .

오호라 ! 동산에 달 떠오르니

그 또한 반갑구나 ,

두어라 ! 이 다섯벗 이면 됐지

내 또 더하여 무엇하리 .

오우가五友歌 : Ode to Five Friends

내 벗이 몇인가 하니 수석과 송죽이라
동산에 달 오르니 그 더욱 반갑고야
두어라 이 다섯밖에 더하여 무엇하리
As I wonder how many buddies I have in treasure,
It comes down to water, stone, pine, and bamboo.
O, moonrise over mount’n, adds more to joyful company.
Let’s leave it at that. What’ll I need other than these five?

수(水)
구름빛이 좋다하나 검기를 자로한다
바람소리 맑다하나 그칠적이 하노매라
좋고도 그출뉘 없기는 물뿐인가 하노라
Water:
Though cloud's color is said great, it’s so often dark.
Though wind sounds clear, it is with many pauses.
Great yet pauseless, is it not the water!

석(石)
꽃은 무슨일로 퓌면서 쉬이지고
풀은 어이하여 푸르는듯 누르나니
아마도 변티 아닐손 바회뿐인가 하노라
Rock:
What has made flowers bloom, then easily wither?
How come grasses get green, then turn to yellow?
Perhaps, the one never changing is but the rock.

송(松)
뎌우면 꽃 퓌고 추우면 잎 지거늘
솔아 너는 어찌 눈서리를 모르는댜
구천에 뿌리 곧은줄 그로하여 아노라
Pine:
On warm weather flowers bloom, then fade as it gets cold.
Pine, how come you dare not seem to feel the snow-frost?
I can envision your deep-rooted, sturdy nature, by that.

죽(竹)
나모도 아닌거시 풀도 아닌거시
곧기는 뉘 시키며 속은 어이비였는댜
뎌러코 사시에 푸르니 그를 좋아하노라
Bamboo:
Though being nor tree, nor grass,
How can it be so straight, and empty inside?
Azure like that around the year, I just love it.

월(月)
작은것이 높이 떠서 만물을 다 비취니
밤중의 광월이 너만한이 또 있느냐
보고도 말 아니하니 내 벗인가 하노라
Moon:
As a tiny object that has risen, illuminates the whole world
In midst of night, what else is bright as you, glowing moon?
For saying none as if not seeing, you are my true buddie.
